If Cordillera Region is a basketball team, it will be one packed with star power led by Banaue Rice Terraces, its unanimous MVP. The 2,000 year-old terraces that were carved into the mountains of Ifugao holds the distinction as being the “Eight Wonder of the World“.
Backing up the Banaue Rice Terraces are fellow all-star players that makes the Cordillera Region a true powerhouse. These terraces are bursting not only of rice but also of vegetables native to the region.
This ingenuity of the people of Cordillera will always remain a source of pride for every Filipinos.
If you haven’t been to any of these, please do yourselves a favor and witness firsthand their amazing beauty:
Batad Rice Terraces – An hour of travel away from Banaue, the tiny community of Batad is home to terraces of rice that have a striking resemblance to an amphitheater. This unique look makes it stand out among all the terraces not only in the region but also in all of the Philippines. For a complete experience, you can also swim and relax at the Tappiya Falls, also located in Batad.
Maligcong Rice Terraces – going to Bontoc will not be complete without visiting the majestic Maligcong Rice Terraces which is only 30-minutes away from Poblacion. Legitimately beyond comparison even against Banaue or Batad, the scenic terraces of Maligcong also provides access to climbers of Mt. Kupapey. My suggestion is if you actually go for a climb, do it before sunrise and I guarantee you’ll have one of the best morning ever!
Pat-yay Rice Terraces – the village of Pat-yay is situated deep inside the mountains between Ifugao and Mt. Province. It is part of the Municipality of Mayoyao, Ifugao. The rice terraces is surrounded by mountains and villages while a river divides it right in the middle. Kids can be commonly seen playing and running around the terraces. The only dilemma is the travel to Pat-yay itself. The only routes are from Barlig, Batad or Mayoyao but all three will need a full day just to reach the rice terraces. However, the reward is the picturesque view of the terraces which can also be viewed from Mt. Amuyao.
Cordillera Region has its fair share of beautiful destinations it can offer but one cannot ignore that its number one attraction will always be the rice terraces. There are new sceneries that are being discovered in the Cordilleras from caves to mountains, from lakes to dams but still these ancient but perfectly created terraces will be top of mind when you think of the Cordilleras.
Now let it be known that there is truth in the ad: “Stairways! It’s more fun in Cordillera!”
